MTV and United Way have launched a partnership to create opportunities for young people across the country to take an Alternative Spring Break.  This program connects young people to a range of community service projects, including Storm Corps, an initiative of MTV and United Way to help rebuild communities damaged in the 2004-2005 hurricane seasons.  FedEx and Home Depot sponsored the project to send 100 students to our hurricane devastated region.

During the week of March 11 - 18, 2006, approximately 36 of these young people (ages 18 and over) came to Baldwin County to work with those families who are still needing assistance after Hurricane Ivan.  Their projects included repairing and replacing roofs, windows and doors, as well as repairing, replacing and refinishing drywall.

MTV News devoted a week of programming to profiling these young people using their time off to give back.  The week of news reports culminated in a full documentary on the Storm Corps, which followed volunteers as they trained and worked to rebuild our Gulf Coast.  “The Amazing Break” premiered on Saturday, March 25, 2006 at 11:30 AM on MTV.

Building on their deep commitment to United Way crisis response and helping communities rebuild after disasters, FedEx and Home Depot Foundation supported Storm Corps with financial and in-kind resources.

Storm Corps is a program designed to live on longer than just the week of rebuilding.  Before returning home, participants were encouraged to share their experiences of the Gulf Coast in their communities.
